In case you haven’t heard, last Thursday Vermont became the first state to pass a bill that requires food makers to label products made with GMO’s (genetically modified organisms). Governor Peter Shumlin has said that he looks forward to signing the bill into law, whose requirements will take effect in July 2016. (Unlike the bills in Maine and Connecticut, this one does not depend on other states passing similar laws in order for progress to begin.) This is HUGE news, people!!!
If you are unfamiliar with GMO’s or need a refresher course, read this short article from Well & Good. It quickly sums up why GMO’s are so dangerous to our health. I promise it is worth five minutes of your day.
Now that you’ve read that, let me tell you something else. 80% of the packaged food on our grocery shelves is banned in the European Union. American companies have even reformulated their products that they sell there. Having a food supply free of GMO’s in the U.S. is a real possibility – if we want it to be.
I try not to get political on this blog; I want to keep it fun and light and I don’t want you to think I’m an angry conspiracy theorist (I’m not). But let me say this: it does not matter whether you are a democrat or a republican on this one. Do you believe you have a right to know what’s in your food and the food you feed your children?

I’ll get off my soapbox now.
And congratulations to Vermont!
