June Beauty Heroes: Honua Skincare

Honua Skincare Review on barebeauty.com

For the last few weeks (which have flown by), I’ve been experimenting with the products from the Beauty Heroes June box.  I have to say, I have a love/hate relationship with testing new skincare.  On the one hand, I know what works for me, so I can be lazy or hesitant to shake things up.  On the other hand, the nerdy, thirsty-for-knowledge side of me is curious about ingredients I haven’t yet experienced.  This month, Beauty Heroes has featured Honua, a Hawaiian skincare brand that uses a lot of turmeric in their formulas.  That’s all I needed to hear to motivate me.  I mean, turmeric is the most anti-inflammatory plant around!  In 2007, the respected ethnobotanist James A. Duke, Phd. published one of the most comprehensive studies on turmeric to date.  He determined turmeric appears to outperform many pharmaceuticals in its effects against several chronic, debilitating diseases, and does so with virtually no adverse side effects.  So, just think of what it can do for your skin…

This month’s hero product is Honua’s Aloha Youth Serum.  Wow.  My normal daytime skincare routine is usually limited to toner, face oil and a tinted SPF; I normally do all my “treatment” at night.  This product has changed my ways.  The Aloha Youth Serum has two forms of Turmeric in it; sun infused and CO2 extracted turmeric, making it very potent. It also has whole plant vitamin C from the Noni plant, firming Hibiscus, and line smoothing Kava Kava – all locally sourced from small farms in Hawaii.  This serum’s consistency is between a cream and a gel, and it provides the best of all worlds – skin becomes less inflamed, brighter, glow-y and more plump and firm-looking – in one use.  What?!  I was really surprised and kind of couldn’t believe it when I looked in the mirror later in the day and saw the visible difference in my skin.  I’ve been using it on and off for a few weeks, and I’m excited to see how it performs in the long-term.

Honua’s Sidekick product is their Olena Face Oil, which is also rich in turmeric, and feels almost medicinal.  Turmeric and cacao make its scent is very potent (in a good way), and you can immediately tell that this product has therapeutic qualities. Readily absorbed by the skin, this light, anti-inflammatory oil is a cure-all.  It is great for acne, eczema, sunburn, insect bites, you name it.

Valued at $106, this month’s Beauty Heroes Box is a great deal, as usual.  Members receive it for less than $40!  You can sign up for it here, and Beauty Heroes members get 15% off everything every day in the Beauty Heroes Beauty Shop.

Speaking of turmeric, have you tried my turmeric latte recipe?  Whether you’re cleansing or just a little under the weather, this elixir works wonders.
