Aimee Raupp is a renowned women’s health and fertility expert, and I was lucky enough hear her speak at W.E.L.L. Summit last month in New York City. She is a wealth of knowledge, and all I could think was, “if only I had known about her when I was struggling to become pregnant”. After a lot of research and regularly seeing a naturopath and acupuncturist for about two years, I arrived at many of the conclusions that Aimee writes about in her books and on her blog. She has helped thousands of women on their path to fertility and optimum health in her own practice, and she has even developed her own 100% toxin-free skincare line that is clean enough to eat. Read on for a few of Aimee’s valuable health and beauty tips!
As a women’s health and fertility expert, my biggest message to women who are trying to conceive is to really focus on optimizing their health, as their fertility is a function of optimal health. In my latest book, Yes You Can Get Pregnant: Natural Ways to Improve Your Fertility Now and Into Your 40s, I explain that what you put on your skin seeps into your bloodstream and can affect your body systems. My personal rule of thumb is, I don’t put anything on my skin that I couldn’t eat.
After searching for truly wholesome, fertility-friendly products for myself and my patients and not being satisfied, I created a line of beauty products out of my kitchen – and with lots of hard work and inspiration, it’s grown into a nationally-recognized brand! But the bigger picture is this: while choosing healthy products is important, beauty starts with loving and respecting yourself so much that it radiates from the inside out!
As I am preparing my body to conceive my second child (at age 42!), here’s what I do on a daily basis to support my skin and nourish the cells in my body:
Morning Routine
It’s really simple, I splash my face with cold water and then I apply my own handcrafted Aimee Raupp Beauty Anti-Aging Facial Oil. As I massage the oil in, I think about how good it feels going on my skin, I think about how much I appreciate myself and my beauty, inside and out.
If I am heading to work or have an event, I will then apply makeup. I only use super clean makeup brands like: Modern Minerals, 100% Pure, NuEvolution and some Bare Minerals products. My rule of thumb is not to use any products that score higher than a 2 on the Environmental Working Group Cosmetic Database site. If I’m working from home, I don’t put on any makeup.
And then, after I have a little protein in my stomach (like a handful of cashews or a hardboiled egg) I take the following supplements (that I know make my skin glow from the inside out):
- 2 capsules of Dr. Ron’s Liver pills (from grass fed cattle)
- 3,000 iu’s of Pure Encapsulations Vitamin D (liquid)
- 1 MegaFoods probiotic (I actually take this on an empty stomach, before I eat for the first time of the day)
- 6-8 tablets of Nutrex Hawaiian Organic Spirulina (or I use 1 scoop of Amazing Grass Greens Superfoods in my smoothie)
Evening Routine
Before I head to bed (usually between 10 and 11pm) I use my own handcrafted Aimee Raupp Beauty Argan Oil Facial Cleanser. I am obsessed with my facial cleanser. It just feels so good going on. I make sure I take time, about 45-60 seconds, to really massage it into my face and neck, including the area around my eyes. And then, using a washcloth soaked in warm water, I wipe off the cleanser, taking all the debris and makeup from my day off my precious skin.
After my skin is clean, I then apply a liberal amount of my Aimee Raupp Beauty Anti-Aging Facial Oil, massaging it into my face and neck. I finish it all off with some of my Aimee Raupp Beauty Cocoa Butter Eye Cream, applying it around my entire eye area. During this entire routine, I really try to be present and aware and focus on appreciation for my skin and how good it feels to take care of myself in such a loving way!
In addition to practicing a healthy beauty routine from the inside, out, a healthy preconception lifestyle is one that includes eating a nutrient-dense diet high in protein (I prefer organic and pastured, grass-fed animal protein), lots of healthy fats, green vegetables, fruit, limited gluten-free grains and sugar. Women should also include things like meditation, exercise, ample sleep and overall being in a joyful and optimistic mental state of mind.
