When I’m busy (which is basically all the time these days), I tend to fall into a makeup rut. On one hand, I pride myself on being able to get ready in about half the time it took me pre-kids, but on the other, I feel like a bore. Ana at LeVert Beauty keeps me on my toes by sending me the latest and greatest, and it may sound silly, but I feel like a new color can change my face, my mood, my whole day. One of the reasons that beauty is a multi-billion dollar industry is that cosmetics can be transformational – and I’m not talking in that bad way that masks a woman’s unique beauty and bone structure, or contours her into looking like a Barbie doll. What I mean is that a new, current color can brighten up your face and put a pep in your step, and don’t we all need that sometimes? I thought I’d tell you about a few new releases that I’ve been loving. Hey, I may even fall into a new rut…
Kjaer Weis recently launched a new lipstick color, and I’m obsessed with it. Affection is so unique; in the tube it looks a little ho-hum, like a basic rose. But on the lips, it’s a pale, bright red that brings to mind the natural lips of the subject of a renaissance painting. As Kirsten Kjaer Weis says, “you look like yourself, but with the volume turned up”.
Kjaer Weis also released a new Bronzer, Lustrous. Like Kjaer Weis’ other bronzer, Dazzling, it is a somewhat shimmery, sheer, creamy formula. However, while Dazzling has more olive undertones, Lustrous is more red, making it perfect for those with more pink in their skin. This bronzer provides fair skin a just-back-from vacation glow, medium skin a with a soft contour, and it can even act as a highlighter for those with dark skin. I love how sheer the formula is, and how it glides onto skin. You can’t really mess it up.
For those of you who have been reading for a while, you know that I favor warm, bronze-y eyes in the summer; these tones look great on all eye colors, and they complement sun-kissed skin better than any other color-way out there (just my opinion). The new Ilia Beauty Essential Eye Palette in Prima is a new favorite, and just different enough from the usual suspects in my makeup bag. I like that depending how you mix the colors, you can create a natural looking, daytime eye as well as a warm, smokey eye (which I prefer to a black/grey smokey eye, as it looks more natural and effortless). The formula is talc-free and silky, and it lasts all day.
Because there haven’t been very many eye primer options in the clean beauty world, I haven’t worn one in years, and almost forgot about them. However, many of my readers, who are still switching over to clean cosmetics, are always asking for a nontoxic swap. Ilia created a great one, and I’ve been test-driving it for about a month. On & On Brightening Primer has brightening and tightening ingredients (mineral pigments, hydrating Aloe, regenerating Rose Hip Oil, and de-puffing Arnica) that create the perfect smooth canvas for eye makeup. No creases, I promise. It’s pretty amazing.
Last, while I don’t get a lot of manicures these days, I am love, love, loving the new nail polish collection from Sundays. I’m not particularly adventurous when it comes to nail color – I generally stick to pale nude-pink, classic red, or a vampy-wine. BUT, their No. 5, a pale, barely-there lavender is my new jam. It looks good on tips and toes, compliments any skin tone, and it lasts forever (like over a week, which seems impossible).
