A W3LL PEOPLE Makeup Lesson with Shirley Pinkson: Part I

While I was in New York last month, I was lucky enough to hook up with Shirley Pinkson, the creative genius behind W3LL PEOPLE, at the new Birchbox store in Soho.  I get a lot of questions from readers as to how to mix creamier products with mineral powders when applying their makeup.  Shirley’s gotcha covered, ladies.  Read on for a simple step-by-step guide to gorgeous.

Start with Narcissist Stick Foundation (I’m wearing #5):  There are 3 application choices: (1) Warm onto fingertips and and tap/blend onto complexion, (2) use W3LL PEOPLE Foundation Brush, (3) for even flexible coverage, a Beautyblender.  Shirley does not recommend swiping the stick directly onto complexion, at the risk of over applying.

Then, dip the W3LL PEOPLE Kabuki Brush directly into Altruist Satin Mineral Foundation (I’m wearing #13): Tap the brush into the lid of the jar and swirl around to evenly distribute powder.  Brush onto face using confident, downward strokes until you achieve your desired amount of coverage.  DO NOT “buff” the powder onto skin using circular strokes.  This only makes your peach fuzz stand up, which isn’t cute, and it also makes your face look fuller from a distance.

Contour using Bio Mineral Bronzer (I’m wearing #52): Dip the W3LL PEOPLE Kabuki Brush directly into the jar, then tap brush into the lip of the jar and swirl around to work power into brush.  Sweep from temples down, below cheekbones, in a C-shape.  Also apply a little to the crease of the eye for a gentle, natural-looking contour.  Then, apply a light dusting of Bio Brightener Powder over complexion to boost radiance and blur imperfections.

Capitalist Mineral Brow Pigment (in 912) provides a soft, full brow. Be sure to choose colors one to two shades lighter than your hair color for a more youthful, eye opening brow.

For this look, Shirley used only Hypnotist Natural Mineral Eyepencil to create a “low-maintenance” smoky eye, which means upper-lid-drama only.  The Hypnotist Eye Pencil was applied liberally and broadly to my upper lid. Shirley literally outlined a ‘triangle’ that started at the outermost point of eyelid’s crease. Starting at that point, she brought the liner down to meet the inner corner of my eye. She then filled in the ‘triangle’. The final step was smudging out the edges. The end result: a cat-eyed smokey eye.

Expresionist Bio Extreme Mascara how to:

1. Nestle the wand into the base of the lashes. Get in nice and close for tight definition and lengthening. It will look almost as if you have a thin line of liner on!

2. Wiggle the wand sided to side while gently twirling the wand between your fingertips towards the tips of the lashes to elongate.

3. Let’s do it again! *Precautionary note: If you want to go for a third coat, proceed at your own risk! Result: Caked up lashes! Most mascaras are designed to provide two effective coats.

Universalist ColorStick (I’m wearing #8): Warm onto fingertips and blend into the apples of the cheeks, tapping the color in. Keep color 2 fingers width from the nose.
