With all the Black Friday / Cyber Monday hoopla, my weekly Mama Mondays post is coming ‘atcha a little late this week (I do hope you took advantage of some of those sales – they were killer this year). I was so flattered when Well Rounded NY asked me if I wanted to share the eco-conscious nursery we are working on for our baby boy, due in February (read the complete interview here). In all honesty, it’s a good thing they did, because otherwise this poor baby would be sleeping in a bassinet in an otherwise empty room – the neglected second child story is so true! Annabel’s nursery and wardrobe were ready for her a month or two before she arrived, but we are busy, and this baby is just going to have to roll with it – maybe even in a pink onesie…

As usual, I enlisted the help of my good friend, Ruth Campbell, who is not only talented and creative, but super-resourceful. Ruth is always up for a challenge, and we work really well together. I always have a vision of what I want my rooms to look like, but I just don’t have the time to hunt for every single item. It’s like she has a running inventory of the entire internet and all the stores in Charleston in her brain; she can pull together exactly what I’m looking for – within budget and 95% eco-friendly, I might add – from a mere Pinterest board. (Check out mine here.)
Baby boy’s crib is sustainably produced in an FSC Certified facility and is Greenguard Certified. It is made of solid birch and eco-MDF (medium density fiberboard) and the finishes are non toxic, water-based and free of VOC health hazards.

We chose a crib mattress that is made of a single, solid 5″ layer of Firm natural, organic Dunlop latex. The cute boat and star floor cushions are 100% cotton, washable, and made with 100% natural, nontoxic dyes in child-labor-free facilities.

The rug and the pouf are both made of 100% PET, a polyester fiber made from recycled plastic bottles – you would never know; it feels so soft. The sailor-theme play gym is sustainably made of organic materials.

All of the bedding in the room is organic, fair-trade and utterly luxurious. It is seriously the softest, most cloud-like, yummy bedding I’ve ever come across. The queen size mattress is also made of organic latex – it sounds weird, but once you sleep on one, you’ll never go back!
