Amazing Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is another one of those everyday groceries that can pull double-duty in the beauty world.  I was mostly unaware of its myriad benefits until I did Dr. Sherri Jacobs’ 21-day Metabolic Cleanse almost two years ago.  It has been a staple in my diet ever since and I have learned more and more that it can really cross over from cupboard to vanity much like coconut oil.  I usually don’t do the DIY thing when it comes to beauty, but if all it takes is mixing the stuff with water or honey, I’m game.

Make sure that you buy organic, raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar, or you won’t receive nearly as many of it’s health benefits.  I like Bragg’s the best.

The number-one benefit of apple cider vinegar is the balancing of pH levels, creating an alkalized state (health experts want us to be more alkaline than acidic).  It also has serious antifungal, antibacterial, and antiviral properties.

Digestion: The malic acid in a shot of apple cider vinegar before bed (or anytime of day) will take care of mild to moderate acid reflux, indigestion, heartburn or constipation.  Lately, due to my pregnancy, I’ve been taking a shot every night to take care of some of these ugly symptoms, and it really works.  Or, if you had a big night, dilute a couple of teaspoons of apple cider vinegar in room-temperature or warm water the next morning.  It will settle your stomach and clear your head.

Weight loss: If you don’t exercise and eat well, apple cider vinegar is not going to save you.  However, some people swear it speeds weight loss by making them feel full longer.  Many natural health experts also say that it’s acetic acid, enzymes and soluble fiber increase fat metabolism.

A Good Night’s Sleep: Mix a couple of teaspoons of apple cider vinegar with hot water and raw honey before bed for a sleepy-time elixir.

Detox: High levels of potassium in the vinegar work like a clarifying tonic on the body.  The next time you get ready to slip into a warm bath, add one to two capfuls of apple cider vinegar. It draws toxins out of the body, leaving behind toned and moisturized skin.

Sunburn and Bug Bite Remedy: Apple cider vinegar is a natural antiseptic and create pH balance on the skin.  Soothe bug bites or a sunburn by soaking in the vinegar and applying it to the affected area.  You can also dilute a cup of two in a warm bath for all-over relief.

Blemishes: When used as a toner, it helps curbs acne and blemishes with its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties.  Psoriasis sufferers praise apple cider vinegar for reducing inflammation. Apply a few drops to a cotton ball and rub on your T-zone or other dry spots to prevent breakouts and minimize blemishes. Scarlett Johansson swears by this and she has the resources to use anything.

Hair rinse: Skip harsh shampoos and wash away buildup with an apple cider vinegar rinse.  This do-it-yourself treatment makes strands shinier, reduces frizz and seals cuticles. It also simulates the scalp to promote hair growth.

Wart removal: Can’t afford surgery to get rid of warts? Try placing a cotton pad soaked in apple cider vinegar on top, then secure with a bandage. Leave on overnight and remove in the morning. If you stick to this consistently for a week, you should start to see results. (Warning: Don’t pick at your skin as the wart dries up.)

Foot soak: Go the natural route with your at-home pedicure and use apple cider vinegar to soothe aching and swollen feet. This provides instant relief for pregnant women, runners, high-heel lovers and flip-flop wearers.

Deodorant: The smell of apple cider vinegar is putrid, but it pales in comparison to underarm odor. Rub a little into your pits and the odor will eventually neutralize.  (Disclaimer – I have not tried this one!)
