What About Baby Part IV

Okay, we’ve covered Baby Shampoo, Baby Wash and Diaper Cream.  I have been asked about Baby Lotion, so here goes the next chapter of What About Baby.

Remember, what goes on your baby goes in your baby.  Read (or re-read) my post on body lotion here.  In my humble opinion, you absolutely must make the switch to Clean lotions and creams, if nothing else.  They are not immediately washed off; they sink into your skin and their ingredients are absorbed into your bloodstream in minutes.  Johnson & Johnson: not good.  Aveeno: not good.  Noodle & Boo: not good.  They contain parabens, phthalates, phenoxyethanol, propylene glycol, BHT, artificial color, the list goes on and on.  Some safe options:

Earth Mama Angel Baby is a trust-worthy product line.  This lotion smells like nature’s creamsicle: vanilla and orange oil, yum.  Shea butter, olive oil and calendula soothe and moisturize.  It is gluten-free, toxin-free, synthetic fragrance-free, dye-free, preservative-free and vegan.  It scores a 0 on the Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep database.  It is widely available and even caried by some Target stores.  What are you waiting for?  Cost: about $20 for 8 oz.  Purchase it here.

Ingredients: Aloe barbadensis (organic aloe) leaf juice extract, Olea europaea (organic olive) oil, Aspalathus linearis (organic rooibos) extract, Calendula officinalis (organic calendula)flower extract, Olivoyl hydrolyzed oat protein, Cetearyl alcohol, Glyceryl oleate, Glyceryl stearate, Kosher vegetable glycerin, Vanilla planifolia (organic vanilla) fruit extract, Butyrospermum parkii (organic shea) butter, Citrus sinensis (organic sweet orange), Xanthan gum

I love Erbaviva.  The entire line is at least 95% organic, which is no small feat.  This lotion goes on light and clean and is scented with mandarin and chamomile oils.  Cost: about $16 for 6 oz.  Purchase it here.

Ingredients: De-ionized water, sweet almond oil, cetearyl wheat bran glycosides and cetearyl alcohol (natural emulsifiers), avocado oil, algae extract, shea butter, jojoba oil, sodium PCA, stearyl alcohol, allantoin, potassium sorbate, organic mandarin peel oil and organic chamomile flower oil, tocopheral (vitamin E)

weleda-baby-creamIt is no secret that I am a big fan of Weleda’s Calendula product line.  It is one of my favorite natural ingredients because of its soothing, anti-inflammatory powers.  This cream is great for babies with very sensitive skin or those prone to eczema and it’s naturally antiseptic.    Cost: about $12 for 2.6 oz.  Purchase it here.

Ingredients:Water (Aqua), Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Oil, Lanolin, Sesamum Indicum (Sesame) Seed Oil, Kaolin, Alcohol, Hydrolyzed Beeswax, Glyceryl Linoleate, Silica (Silica), Calendula Officinalis (Calendula) Flower Extract, Chamomilla Recutita Matricaria (Chamomile) Flower Extract, Fragrance (Parfum)*, Limonene*, Linalool*, Benzyl Benzoate*, Benzyl Salicylate*, Geraniol*. * from natural essential oils

Silky, not greasy, this baby lotion is intensely hydrating.  Ingredients include tamanu, coconut and olive oils as well as aloe vera.  Don’t be frightened by the Cetearyl Olivate, Sorbitan Olivate, Cetyl Palmitate and Palm Stearic Acid – they are natural emulsifiers.  Cost: about $22 for 8 oz.  Purchase it here.

Ingredients: aloe barbadensis (organic aloe) juice, cocos nucifera (organic coconut) oil, camellia sinensis (organic green tea) extract, cetearyl olivate, sorbitan olivate, cetyl palmitate, sorbitan palmitate, olea europaea (organic olive) oil, calophyllum inophyllum (organic tamanu) oil, palm stearic acid, xanthan gum (polysaccharide gum), aurantium dulcis (sweet orange) essential oil, anthemis nobilis (organic chamomile) flower oil.

Again, there is nothing wrong with plain, old coconut oil either, although it is not for everyone.
